MDS Transmodal BAF Calculator
Q: How has the methodology for the BAF Calculator been validated with the container shipping industry?
A: The methodology for the BAF Calculator was developed by MDS Transmodal, but has been validated by Hapag Lloyd. The line adopted our methodology for its Marine Fuel Recovery (MFR) mechanism.
Q: What is the source for the container shipping services included in the BAF Calculator?
A: The source is the MDS Transmodal Containership Databank, which provides data on the deployment of the global container shipping fleet to individual services with information on the operator, route, TEU capacity, service frequency and port rotation etc.
Q: Which container shipping services are included in the BAF Calculator?
A: The services included are all those deploying fully cellular vessels on the seven major deep sea trade lanes.
Q: What is the source of the bunker prices in the BAF Calculator? Can I change them?
A: The bunker prices are based on public domain information; more specifically we calculate the average prices for Fujairah, Long Beach, Rotterdam and Singapore based on bunker ports news and ship and bunker. You can change the bunker costs to reflect your own assumptions about the type of bunker fuel or the future oil price.
Q: How often - and when - is the BAF Calculator updated and what changes following an update?
A: The BAF Calculator is updated quarterly in February, May, August and November. The bunker prices and services are updated based on the most up-to-date information from Bunker World and the MDST Containership Databank.
Q: How does the BAF calculator calculate the bunker consumption for a service?
A: The bunker consumption is calculated taking into account the average ship size deployed on the service, the frequency of the service, the number of calls on the port rotation, the steaming distance and the required speed at sea.
Q: How does the BAF Calculator calculate the number of TEU transported by each service?
A: The number of TEU transported by the service is based on results from the MDST Container Business Model (CBM), which compares estimated demand (using data from the MDST World Cargo Database) with estimated supply (using data from the MDST Containership Databank) on the trade lane to derive the utilization level. For the BAF Calculator, the utilization levels are estimated for services transiting the Suez Canal, crossing the Atlantic and crossing the Pacific and then applied to the relevant trade lanes.
Q: How does the BAF Calculator calculate separate headhaul and backhaul bunker costs/TEU?
A: The BAF Calculator allocates the bunker cost for the overall journey to the two legs taking into account the average ship size, the utilization level on the two legs and the unit revenues for the two legs.
Q: What's provided for free in the BAF Calculator?
A: You can access for free the headhaul and backhaul bunker cost per TEU before and after the IMO2020 deadline for one representative service operating on each of the seven trade lanes.
Q: What's included in the Premium Subscription to the BAF Calculator?
A: The Premium Subscription allows the user to access the headhaul and backhaul bunker cost per TEU before and after the IMO2020 deadline for all services deploying fully cellular ships on the seven trade lanes and provides access to the main features of the services. The cost is £500 (including VAT) for a single user license for access to the service for a quarter and £1,800 (including VAT) for a single user license for access to the service for a year.
Q: How can I calculate the difference in bunker costs per TEU for a container shipping service that isn't included in the BAF Calculator, such as a short sea or feeder service?
A: MDS Transmodal can carry out a separate calculation for the relevant service. Please contact us for a quotation.
